Doors

Pat H. Fredeman

I find myself continually asking people about doors:
Is this door open?
Will this door close?
Does this door lead anywhere
   Different?
Does anyone ever return through this door?
Will I return through this door?

Where I come from doors lead somewhere.

Does anyone never return through this door?
Some doors revolve.
Did their inventor have a handle on time warps and relativity?

Kids have the right idea;
Go round and round
And end up in a really different place
And nobody knows.

All because of being locked inside a movie house
      At age seven?
With fading images of Bogart and Cagney and Boyer,
Lamar and Bergman and Rita H.
Empty lobby   Empty ticket booth   Empty seats
The Saturday suits and dresses locked out
Kept company only by illusions
Mellowing into shadows,
The blank screen's afterlife
Beckoning to another world
Breathing on the edge of presence
Lurking and waiting for
The magic of belief.
