Jack o'lanterns

Julie Shiel

They bleed orange,
leering from jagged faces,
their rough-hewn teeth
dripping the visceral remains
of their own broken bodies.

They swallow flames,
the malevolent light
flickering in the
darkness of hollow eyes,
as their flesh curls black
behind vacant smiles.

In the winter chilled wind
they whisper,
moaning in alien madness
as they murmur severed memories
under an Autumn moon.
